Forummoderator Bram Zeegers

Door toeval kwam ik vorige week op het Subsim-forum terecht, toen een van onze eigen forumbezoekers de volgende post plaatste:

"Vandaag kwam ik er achter dat ik Bram Zegers al een aantal jaren kende zonder te weten wie hij was. Hier leer je hem van een andere kant kennen."

Collega Robert en ik zijn toen direct het forum ingedoken en hebben alle 3300 berichten nagelopen op relevantie voor de Zaak Holleeder. De verrassing was niet zo groot toen dat niet zo bleek te zijn. Wel kwam er een beeld naar voren van een erudiete, intelligente, humoristische, joviale en in zijn rol als forummoderator, soms strenge man die discussiert op het scherpst van de snede.

In discussies over internationale rechtsregels laat hij zich zien als iemand die erg gelooft in de opbouw van een internationale rechtsorde. Zo neemt hij duidelijk stelling in de zaak Van Anraat, die grondstoffen voor gifgas aan Saddam Hoessein leverde. Of gaat hij in op de details van de rechtzaak tegen dezelfde Saddam.

De Oorlog tegen Terreur en de opkomst van moslimfundamentalisme is ook een stokpaardje: "I have no problems with Muslims in my country as long as they are loyal citizens, which the majority is. However I am not blind and I see a growing extremism amoungst the second and third generation of immigrants, who were never properly taught how to behave in a free society and are now being hijacked by radical imans. (..)

If you see this kind of terrorism in the face, religiously motivated, totalitarian (no limits to political objectives or human targets) and only capable of destruction than you have to take a principle stand: this can't be condoned. As soon as you do that, you are in an "us versus them" situation whether you like it or not. And that line is very clear. No need for nuances here!"

Of de affaire Hirsi Ali. Zeegers neemt uitgebreid de moeite de niet-Nederlandse forumbezoekers van tekst en uitleg te voorzien over de voor outsiders onbegrijpelijke politieke situatie: "Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a very brave woman, who is not leaving Holland out of fear, but only because she can get a good position at a think tank in the US. As she said on her press conference, she can live with threats and fear. But she also confirmed that since last year her plan was to leave Parliament at the next elections, sceduled for the spring of 2007, because the personal protection she needed made her work as a member of Parliament ineffective."

Als moderator was Bram Zeegers strikt in het handhaven van de orde. Als hij een paar dagen weg is geweest en een grote wanorde aantreft spreekt hij de verantwoordelijken in niet mis te verstane bewoordingen aan:

"Been away from the forum for a few days and guess what:

"Jokes" about nuking Iran and pictures with mushroom clouds, plus the accidental wish to nuke other countries as well.

Many people take offense against small talk about nuking a country. Nuking a country means evaporizing it's population and will create more problems than it solves.

We can discuss nuclear technology, nuclear weapons, nuclear warfare, but as has been said before on this forum we don't promote nuclear war or joke about it against any country. It pollutes the discussion, the thread and the forum. The mere fact that Iran is a Muslim country or has an oppressive regime with a controversial policy doesn't change the subsim policy.

Please, no more small talk about nuking.

Maar, niet verwonderlijk voor een ex-advocaat, is hij het meest betrokken in discussies over recht, rechtsorde en straffen. Over de doodstraf heeft hij bijvoorbeeld het volgende te zeggen:

"I have to say that I find the death penalty totally unnecessary as a preventive measure. It only satisfies those who want revenge, which is not the best of motives..."

En ingaand op een artikel over het downloaden van kinderporno zegt hij het volgende:

"I find the title of the article demagogic and I am always dislike demagogy, whether it is political correct or not - as it is in this case.

The punishment is about downloading child porn. Every normal human being would consider sexual abuse of children for pornographic (and often commercial) purposes distusting and incomaparable to software and music piracy. But downloading is clicking a few times out of - sick - curiosity. And I find the maximum punishment for that (seven years) a bit stiff, but acceptable. Producing child pornography should hold a much higher maximum punishment."

Slechts zeer zelden geeft Zeegers iets prijs over zijn persoonlijke situatie. Zo blijkt dat hij een vriendig is kwijtgeraakt aan de Scientology Church:

Lost a good girlfriend, who was caught and later mangled by them. A few years - and a couple of expensive training courses - later her life had dramatically changed and she became - and still is - a different person(ality).

Interessant is nog dat hij aankondigt in 2007 een boek te willen gaan schrijven. Waar het boek over gaat is niet duidelijk: "I plan to write a book in 2007." is alles wat hij hierover zegt. Zou het boek gaan over de zaak Holleeder? Bestaan er wellicht aantekeningen? We weten het niet.

Vanaf maart wordt het plotseling stil en worden er geen posts van 'Abraham' meer geplaatst. Aanvankelijk merkt niemand dit op. 'Abraham' is wel vaker voor langere periodes niet op het forum. Zo wordt zijn terugkeer in december, na een maandenlange afwezigheid als volgt aangekondigd: "I'm back, alive and well, well, well... (I repeat to make sure that everyboby gets the message)

Anyway, good to be back and I love to educate and/or irritate you all.

To start with the last: Neal immediately gave me my rank as moderator back with the powers attached. That means no nuclear proliferation in the Middle East on the General Topics Forum."

Een kleine week geleden verschijnt echter een topic over de vermeende dood van Bram. Een paar dagen later volgt de bevestiging dat 'Abraham', forummoderator en goed voor meer dan 3300 forumposts, inderdaad de overleden Bram Zeegers is. De forumadministrator verwoord het als volgt:

"We shared an interest in history and I took great pleasure in being able to throw a question at him and then just listen to the answer unfold . You learnt to choose your own words carefully because he clearly had the knowledge base to quickly peel away your arguments, albeit in a most respectful and good humoured way.

Its eerie seeing that photograph now.. Aren't we just a bunch of ordinary folk who share a common interest in naval warfare ? Then you wake up and there is that playful photograph in the context of a world I will never experience or would never want to. Within it all there is a story we can only guess at. Did Bram pay the price for an act of bravery? The pressures he must have been under ? Was it suicide, murder accident ?

What price now to be able to ask Bram some questions ?

Rest in Peace, Bram. I only wish I'd taken more time."
